The Chapel

Renovated to a high standard in 2014, it provides all the home comforts you need in a beautiful location with sea views. There is private parking at the house. The charming village of Vidlin has a well-stocked shop within walking distance and a service bus route nearby. In the centre of the village is an attractive marina. The nearest pub in Brae is 10 miles away and it’s just 22 miles to the ferry port of Lerwick.

Guests have access to the whole house including the secluded and sheltered back garden and the front garden with picnic bench. The living/dining/kitchen is an airy, spacious room with floor to ceiling windows letting in lots of light. In the evening you can watch beautiful sunsets and enjoy the sea view while sitting having a glass of wine inside, or outside on the picnic bench on a beautiful summer evening. There is private parking in front of the house.

The roomy bedroom has a comfy king sized bed with a vanity table and full length mirror. A hair dryer and hair straighteners are available in the vanity table drawer.

The utility room has a fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer with plenty hanging space to dry clothes. There is a clothes steamer in the utility room above the freezer.

The toilet/shower room is compact but well equipped with essential toiletries.

The road to Vidlin leaves the main A970 from Lerwick just south of Voe, before heading west. At Flugarth it meets the sea and you drive past the ferry terminus for Whalsay before turning north towards Vidlin itself. Vidlin is an attractive village that wraps itself around the head of Vidlin Voe, a narrow fjord pointing south. This has an ayre at its end, crossed by the road leading round to the east side of Voe. Since well before 1600 there has been a fishing settlement there. Fishing remains important to the village, which is home to a large marina.

Vidlin is the terminus for the ferry to Out Skerries. The ferry terminus, complete with a very modern waiting room, lies to the north side of the village, close to the school and in the shadow of a recently constructed wind turbine. From there you can make a day trip to Out Skerries.

Back up the hill from Vidlin Voe and the harbour is the village shop and the public hall built, according to the inscription on the side, in 1910. A number of houses and cottages are gathered here, and other crofts are scattered over the hillsides east and west of the harbour. North from Vidlin a minor road leads along the eight mile finger of Lunna Ness. A little less than half way along, this is almost cut in half by East and West Lunna Voes. Overlooking East Lunna Voe is Lunna Kirk, a fascinating church dating back to 1753 and one of the oldest in Shetland still in use. Nearby is Lunna House, parts of which date back to the 1660s.

The Chapel is ideally situated for walking, bird watching and sightseeing, and is a central point for travelling to the North Isles of Yell, Unst and Fetlar.

Directions

Take the A970 from Lerwick. Before reaching the town of Brae you turn right on to the B9075. You will see the sign to Vidlin. Continue on this road, which will be single track some of the way, until you reach the village of Vidlin. You will pass the local shop on the left hand side and then drive across the ayre, which is a small strip of land. Just after you have crossed the ayre you will see a sign to Levaneap on the right. Turn in there and The Chapel is the fifth house on the left.
