Establishment Overview

The Lodge was originally built in 1905 by Sir Watson Cheyne, the eminent Shetland surgeon and microbiologist, as the gardener's cottage at the bottom of the drive of Leagarth House, the residence he built for himself. The estate is walled on one side with the sea on the other and is about 4 acres in total.

The Lodge benefits from the seclusion and space provided by being within the Leagarth estate but also has its own private garden to the front and side of the house. The house won an award in 2019 from Lux Life for The Most Tranquil Accommodation - Shetland Islands. The house is a stone's throw from the sea with a small beach and pier a two-minute walk away. It is located in the centre of the island in the hamlet of Houbie, opposite the Fetlar Interpretive Centre (museum).

Fetlar is known as the garden of Shetland and the island is well known for its flora and fauna. The wildlife is abundant. There is an enormous variety of birds – it is one of the few places in the British Isles where the red necked phalarope breeds – there is a resident otter population, seals can be found all round its coastline and there is the chance of seeing Minke whales or Orcas offshore. Wildflowers abound and walkers relish in the beautiful coastal walks. There are also numerous unspoilt beautiful beaches, the best known being the one at Tresta which has received a seaside award every year since 2008.

The Lodge has recently undergone extensive refurbishment which has concentrated on providing a modern comfortable house whilst retaining original features and comprises:

  • Master bedroom with kingsize bed with sea view
  • Twin bedroom, convertible into super kingsize bed, with sea view
  • Double Bedroom with hill view
  • Modern kitchen/dining opening onto garden
  • Sitting room with sea view
  • Bathroom with bath and shower over
  • Utility area
  • Heating, hot water, wifi included
  • Bed linen and towels included

The Peerie House is located next to the Lodge in its own walled garden. Peerie means small in Shetland dialect so it is compact but perfectly appointed. It has also been recently renovated to a high standard making a delightful light and airy house.

It comprises:

  • Large twin bedroom (beds can be pushed together)
  • Sitting room with sea view (has pull out single bed for one extra person)
  • Galley kitchen with sea view
  • Large shower
  • Separate annexe with washing machine, dryer, extra fridge, deep freeze
